the science of achieving a healthy and happy home as well as successful career.”
Home Science is an interdisciplinary field of knowledge which draws upon many disciplines such as Child development, Food & Nutrition, Textile & Apparel Designing, Human Development and Family Studies, Family Resource Management, Chemistry, Statistics, Physiology, Biology, Environmental science, Economics and Rural Development etc. The home science aims at achieving and maintaining the welfare and well being of home, social and family life in an ever changing society. Home management requires skill and scientific knowledge which does not limit itself to activities within the home but also forms the basis of a challenging profession. Home Science subject is largely scientific in nature and hence requires an analytical mind and scientific acumen. A practical approach, aesthetic, creative and rational attitude will be required to be in this field. This combination of science and art holds five areas of Home Science.

Career Prospects
Home science graduates usually find employment in Teaching, Research, Institutional Management, Extension and Social Welfare, Business and Industrial Concerns, Communication and Self Employment.
- Production jobs - This covers food preservation, dress-making, specialized cooking. Graduates of Home Science can go on to enter the textile business, fashion designing, interior designing etc. or even work in hotels, the food industry etc.
- Research jobs - These projects involve educating specific segments of the population such as mothers, farmers, villagers on the food value of certain food items.
- Sales jobs - Sales promotion of handicrafts, home decore items and food items are given to home science graduates granted they have relevant information and experience.
- Service jobs - Maintenance and supervision of house keeping departments at tourist resorts, hotels, catering facilities, restaurants etc.
- Teaching jobs - THE recognized qualification for a primary school teacher is a Bachelors degree in Home Science and many postgraduates also are taken on as senior secondary school teachers and college professors.
- Technical jobs - Manufacturing industries do require home science graduates to serve as research assistants, food analysts, food scientists etc.
- Entrepreneurs : Home science graduates become entrepreneurs and can provide employment to others.
- In textiles area and as Merchadiser or Designer
- As Nutritionist and Dietition in Hospitals and Food Sector
- In hotel Industry in F&B or in House Keeping at tourist resorts, hotels, catering facilities, restaurants .
- Institutional catering is a major area, which involves taking care of nutrition and diet at schools, colleges, factories, clubs, military canteens and so on. One can work with food product manufacturers or in food product development.
- Resource management is an evolving field, which spans family finance and consumer studies, housing and space design, ergonomics in design development, interior design and decoration, entrepreneurship and institutional management.
